Building Friendships and Showing Respect
On 29 January, the Riverside Theatre was delighted to host the first one-day Cross-Community Workshop for 51 children aged 8-9years from Leaney Primary School and St Bridget's Primary School in Ballymoney. Two facilitators from Bruiser Theatre Company managed a range of drama activities focussed on Co-operation, Collaboration, Empathy and Appreciation while the afternoon session was spent in creative musical theatre composition, direction and role-playing. Bruiser Theatre Company was established by two UU Drama Graduates Lisa May and Stephen Beggs. Not For the Like of Us
In a further development of the Education and Outreach Programme at Riverside Theatre, 47 young people from Detached Youth Services in Coleraine, Ballymoney, Cushendall and Garvagh/Kilrea made their first visit to the Riverside Theatre on Friday 19 February. Working with NEELB Youth Services Team Leader Jim McCartney, the Riverside has commenced an Access and Engagement project which offers teenagers opportunities to attend theatre, debate experiences and form positive personal development skills. The drama production on 19 February was "A Taste of Honey" by Shelagh Delaney and dealt with the nature of family, mixed race relationships, teenage pregnancy, homosexuality and opportunities available to the working classes. Follow-up work will be handled by Youth Workers, who meet many of these vulnerable young people in remote rural areas, acting as carers for parents or in detached street conditions. The next visit will be to attend the Riverside Youth Theatre Production - Big Musical Express on 31 March. Not For the Likes of Us addresses negative perceptions and attitudes that education and culture are only for the fortunate few.
