Rosella Watton Austin - The Power of Gold
Wednesday 19th June, 6.30 - 31st August
The show will be opened by Professor Karise Hutchinson, Provost of the Coleraine campus
This exhibition of striking new work by the renowned local artist and Ulster University graduate Rosella Watton-Austin, has been inspired by the 50th anniversary of the University on the Coleraine campus.
Many of the pieces that will be on show reflect the power of gold; her use of gold leaf on tear jars, horses and images of women bring her subjects to life as if the sun is shining on them. They reflect light and remind the observer that gold has been a source of wealth and power since ancient Egyptian times, over 5000 years ago. Its rarity and value have brought out the best in craftsmanship, and at times the worst in human nature.
The symbol of gold is Au, from the Greek word ‘aurum’, which means the glow of sunshine and it is the only metal of this colour which explains its intrinsic beauty in jewellery and in the decorative arts.
Rosella’s show brings together her own distinctive style of mixed-media technique with gold-adorned objects that tell their own enduring stories of life, love and death.
Running until 31st August – see https://www.riversidetheatre.org.uk/participate/artists-and-exhibitors for more information on gallery opening times.
