Details

Throughout time, women have been portrayed in the arts, more often as objects to be admired than as subjects to be respected.

Art History teaches that women such as Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1656) forged the way to be afforded a place normatively only for men, as a great Artist. Women being the authors of their own narratives is the topic of many talks, and books such as the History of the World in 21 Women (2019) by Jenni Murray. The discussion celebrating women as pioneers continues in many fields, for instance Katherine Johnson (1918) who helped pioneer the use of computers with NASA.

The intention of this exhibition is to bring to life the purpose of the Wo/men’s Network of Ulster University - of encouraging collaboration to enable women to fulfil their potential. This will impact all people if women are afforded the space to flourish.

The women in this exhibition are photographed in their places of work, within the context of Ulster University, illustrating their variance of existences and their spheres of influence. This exhibition was created to celebrate and promote the breadth of women’s talents and skills across the university. The sixteen women photographed, hail from the four campuses; Belfast, Coleraine, Jordanstown and Magee.

These women are subjects with their own unique narratives and journeys.

This exhibition celebrates the uniqueness of the university as a community and illustrates unity in diversity.

Please note: Due to social distancing, visitors must book for their session in advance
